An on page SEO checklist is a short list of checks you run on each page before and after you publish it, so the page matches what searchers want and sends search engines clear signals. The 16 checks below cover intent, title, description, headings, copy, links, images, canonical, indexability and speed.
Use it on new pages, on pages that slipped in rankings, and on any template a developer just changed.

Why use an on page SEO checklist?
An on page SEO checklist makes sure the basics happen every time, no matter who publishes the page. Small misses add up: a missing title on one template or a stray noindex on one section can cost more than any clever copy gains.
A checklist also splits the work cleanly. Some checks are facts a tool can test, like "does this page have a title". Others need a person, like "does this page answer the search better than what ranks now". Knowing which is which saves hours.
The on page SEO checklist: 16 checks
Work through the on page SEO checklist in this order: intent and content first, then the tags people see in search, then the technical tags that decide whether the page can rank at all.
Search intent and content
Match the intent. Search your target phrase and look at what ranks. If the results are step by step guides, a product page will struggle, and the other way round.
Answer in the first two sentences. State the answer or the outcome straight away, then expand. Readers and search features both reward a page that gets to the point.
Cover the subtopics people expect. List the questions the top results answer, plus the ones they skip. Then answer both.
Show real experience. Add your own examples, numbers you measured, screenshots and steps you tested. Google's guidance on creating helpful, people first content asks exactly these questions of a page.
Title, description and headings
Title tag. Put the main keyword near the start, keep it unique, and aim for about 50 to 60 characters as guidance. Google may rewrite titles that are long, vague or repeated across pages.
Meta description. Write a specific summary with the keyword and a reason to click, about 140 to 155 characters. It does not affect ranking directly, but it often becomes the snippet.
One clear H1. The main heading names the topic and contains the keyword or a close variant. More than one H1 is worth a review, not a crisis.
H2s that read like questions people ask. Use the keyword or a variant in two or more, never in every one. Put the answer in the first sentence under each heading.
Links and media
Internal links out. Link to two to five related pages with anchor text that says where the link goes.
Internal links in. Make sure at least a few relevant pages link to this one. A page with no inlinks is hard for crawlers and people to find.
Image alt text. Describe what the image shows in plain words. Skip "image of" and skip stuffing keywords.
Image weight. Compress large files, set width and height to avoid layout shift, and use a modern format where you can.
Technical tags and performance
Indexable. No noindex in the meta robots tag or the X-Robots-Tag header, and the URL is not blocked in robots.txt.
Canonical. One canonical tag pointing to this page's clean URL, or to the main version if it is a duplicate. The target must return 200.
Clean URL. Short, lowercase, hyphenated, readable, with the main keyword and no dates or IDs.
Core Web Vitals. Aim for LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less on real visits.

A worked example
Here is an example of the checklist on one page. Say an agency reviews a "roof repair cost" guide for a client. The tool checks pass: the page has a title, one H1, a canonical to itself and no noindex. The person checks tell a different story. The title starts with the brand name, the first paragraph talks about the company's history, and the actual cost ranges sit in the sixth section.
The fixes are simple. Move the keyword to the front of the title. Rewrite the opening so the first two sentences give the cost ranges and what drives them. Add a table comparing repair types. Link to the related "roof replacement" guide with a descriptive anchor. None of that needed new research, only the checklist.
How to use the on page SEO checklist on an old page
Use the on page SEO checklist on an old page by starting with what search data says, not with the copy. Open Search Console, find the queries the page already gets impressions for, and check whether the title and first paragraph answer the main one.
Then work in this order:
Fix anything that blocks indexing or confuses the canonical.
Rewrite the title and opening around the query the page already earns.
Add the missing subtopics and a table if one helps.
Update facts, dates and screenshots that are out of date.
Add links from two newer related pages.
Change only what needs changing, so you can tell later which edit made the difference.
What an on page SEO checker can automate
An on page SEO checker can test the measurable parts of the checklist across every page at once, which is where tools save the most time. It can't judge intent or copy quality, so keep a person on those.
The checks that suit automation are the ones with a clear yes or no:
Missing or duplicate titles and descriptions.
Missing H1.
Missing canonical, more than one canonical, or a canonical pointing to a broken or redirected URL.
New noindex on a page that used to be indexable.
Broken internal links.
Missing alt text and very large images.
The SEO Issue Checker in the platform is designed for exactly this list. Each rule is plain code with an ID, a severity and saved proof, so you can show a client the URL and the tag, not just a score. Because it runs on crawl data, it can test a whole site at once instead of one page at a time. For the site wide checks that sit above the page level, follow our technical SEO audit checklist.
Common on page SEO mistakes
These mistakes show up again and again in page reviews.
Writing for the keyword, not the searcher. Repeating the phrase does nothing if the page doesn't answer the question.
Burying the answer. Long intros push the useful part below the fold.
Same title on every page of a template. Search engines can't tell the pages apart, and neither can searchers.
Treating character counts as rules. They are guidance. A clear 64 character title beats a vague 52 character one.
Generic anchors. "Read more" tells nobody where the link goes.
Fixing once and never re-checking. A theme update can strip a canonical from every page overnight. Check again after each release, and keep a record that the fix held, as described in what a client SEO report should include.

सवाल और जवाब
What is on page SEO?
On page SEO is everything you control on the page itself to help it rank and earn clicks: the title tag, meta description, headings, copy, internal links, images, structured data and technical tags like the canonical. It differs from off page SEO, which covers links and mentions from other sites.
How long should a title tag be?
Google sets no fixed limit and cuts titles by pixel width, so treat about 50 to 60 characters as guidance. Put the main keyword near the start, make each title unique, and write it so it still makes sense if the end is cut off.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Google says the meta description is not a ranking factor, but it can become the snippet under your result, which affects clicks. Write a unique, specific summary of the page, and expect Google to swap in page text when it matches the search better.
How many internal links should a page have?
There is no magic number. Add links where a reader would want to go next, use descriptive anchor text, and make sure every important page gets links from related pages. Two to five relevant links in a normal article is a sensible habit.
What is the difference between an on page SEO checklist and an on page SEO checker?
A checklist is the list of things a person reviews, including judgement calls like intent and copy quality. A checker is a tool that tests the measurable parts automatically, such as missing titles, duplicate descriptions, missing H1s, broken links and canonical errors. Use the checker for facts and the checklist for judgement.
